The Crossing of the Red Sea by the Israelites

Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568 - 1625)

Walker Art Gallery

1600

The subject of this work is taken from Exodus, Chapter XIV. The Israelites are seen re-organizing after their escape from Egypt. The drawing has unfortunately been cut on the right side after its 1816 sale so that the destruction of Pharoah's armies is now missing. On the left Moses is seen examining the bones of Joseph. The drawing was traditionally attributed to Peter Brueghel the Elder.
