The boy is reading, there is a book at his feet in which he was drawing a cast of the Christ Child from Michelangelo's statue of the Virgin and Child, known as 'The Bruges Madonna'. One of thirteen gifts to five museums by J G Lousada through the Art Fund between 1921 and 1939.
