Description:
Engraved chalice, finely engraved with strapwork scrolls, fruit and flowers. One of three bosses on the foot hinges opens to reveal a compass with 2 sets of hour lines; one for Italian hours is inscribed 'Horaium sine aqua', the other is inscribed 'Horarium ex perspectiva radioium refractorum aquae'. Opposite the hour lines is a vertical scale used to determine the sun's altitude.
