This small-scale, nearly three-quarter length portrait of John Burgoyne (1722-1792) shows the general standing to the right, looking at the spectator. He wears a scarlet coat with a gold lace and yellow waistcoat and holds his hat in his left hand. In the background is the Colosseum.
