Covered bowl and stand

Chinese

Ashmolean Museum

1773 - 1778

This covered bowl and stand was produced in Fujian province in the reign of the Qianlong Emperor (1736-1795). Such a piece of moulded, fluted, bright red lacquer as this covered bowl and stand would only have been produced for a limited period during the reign of Qianlong in the 1770s and for Imperial use only. The bowl and its cover and stand were made by a technique which involved silk being coated and then pressed over a mould which was removed before the application of several coats of lacquer.
