Depicts a man in a deep red jacket on the banks of the Derwent digging by moonlight filling up fox-holes, with a dog and a horse by his side.

Reflects Wright's interest in 17th Century Dutch art rather than the English tradition. Inscribed 'J Wright P/1773' lower left.
