Review number: 1613 (1950)
Provenance:
H. R. Burrows-Abbey
Description:
A collection of 290 pieces of Chinese glass tableware, consisting of a number of early works from the second and third century AD, from several dynasties including even the Sui (581-618 AD) and possibly earlier Dynasties; the majority of pieces date, however, from the Qianlong period (1736-1795). The glasses are brightly coloured to resemble other materials, such as celadon-glazed ceramics and jade. As Lord Crawford noted when the bequest was made in 1930, 'most of the beauty lies in the colour'.
