The Apocalypse

John Bewsey (active 1906 - died 1940)

Kirkleatham Museum

1920

Design for a stained glass window for the great west window in Skelton-in-Clevland Parish Church. It is the only known surviving design for a local church window. The loss of life in the First World War affected every parish in the British Isles. Unsurprisingly, some of the energy of the War effort was soon converted to making memorials and expressing collective grief became almost an industry. The work, through its detailed imagery and quality of execution exudes great symbolism.
