William Holman Hunt (1827 - 1910)

Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery

A typical detailed study made in the Holy Land depicting a view from the Mount of Offence, looking towards the Dead Sea and the Mountains of Moab - morning. Hunt appears to have begun this watercolour around Sept 1854 as indicated in a letter to Thomas Combe: 'Tomorrow morning I am to rise ere the sun to go out to finish a sketch which I commenced on the Mount of Offence...last year about this time'. Today the Mount of Offence is identified with the southern and lowest peak of the Mount of Olives, to the south-east of Jerusalem.
