Leeds was the world centre of the woollen trade when this panoramic view of the city and its environs was painted. It provides a record of Leeds in the late 1790s, at an early stage in its development from rural to manufacturing centre, and just before its Georgian architecture was overwhelmed by massive rebuilding and industrial expansion in the early nineteenth century.
