This is a portrait of a Scottish writer by a friend and follower of Whistler The sitter was one of the leading figures in the so-called Celtic Revival at the end of the 19th century, best known for his literary criticism, poetry and deep interest in art. Theodore Roussel came to England about 1874, and, apart from short periods abroad, remained here for the rest of his life. He met Whistler in 1885 and was profoundly influenced by him, Whistler observing that 'at last I have found a follower worthy of the Master'.
