This artist, who specialised in marine subjects, was a native of Whitby. He was the son of a seaman and himself served on a trading sloop before going to London, where he was employed in painting panoramas and stage scenery. He achieved a certain success, being introduced to William IV and gaining election to the Water Colour Society in 1836.
