Master of the Legend of the Magdalen (1460 - 1515)

The centre panel represents the Seven Sorrows of Mary, while the wings show Christopher Knyvet of Ashwellthorpe, Norfolk, and his wife Catherine as donors, both accompanied by their name-saints and identified by their armorial bearings. On the backs are figures in grisaille of Saints John the Evangelist and Barbara.

Provenance

Commissioned by Christopher Knyvet of Ashwellthorpe, Norfolk; passed to the family of the Barons Berners through the marriage of Edmund Knyvet to Jane Bourchier of Ashwellthorpe; by descent to Lord Berners; Viscount Lee of Fareham by 1923.
