Francis Danby (1793 - 1861)

Bristol Museum & Art Gallery

1824

The City Museum and Art Gallery held an exhibition on the Bristol School of Artists which firmly established the group of artists working in and around Bristol as a distinct and notable school, with Francis Danby as its chief exponent. The Bristol connection is of great importance for it stimulated the magical feeling of romantic poetry which Danby is able to reproduce morc precisely than almost any other painter. The selling of this painting to Thomas Lawrence enabled Danby to move from Ireland to England.
