Much about this large painting remained obscure. The artist was unknown, and the church where the Colonel was buried had not been identified, though it was presumed to be somewhere in the Guildford area. Nonetheless the picture is an unusual record of a regimental occasion, and is interesting in the context of military history in showing the difference in dress between mounted, dismounted and pall-bearer troops on parade. The Colonel's horse is seen prominently in the foreground, draped in black, with his master's boots reversed in the stirrups.
