Kolbe developed several types of landscape work but the most remarkable were the 'Krauterstucke', which are unparalleled in the work of any other artist. Typically, leaves of cabbages and other plants are expanded to such a size that they dwarf men, animals and even trees. In these two prints, all figures, whether animal or human, are omitted. All that is Ieft are the leaves, but with dislocations of scale inbuilt so cunningly that the very small etchings (barely six inches across) appear to be colossal.
