Bird Men and Pots

Artist: Edward Burra (1905 - 1976)

Location: Hove Museum and Art Gallery

Date: 1947

Materials: watercolour

Dimensions: 82 x 57 cm

Grant:

Amount Paid: £4,000 (Total: £16,000)

Vendor: Agnew's

Review number: 3121 (1985)

Description:
Burra was interested in plays, films and fiction that were strong in observation of human behaviour and set in interiors heavy with atmosphere. In this work, the steeply-raked floor, deep recession and grand architecture are all consistent with these interests. They accentuate the physical and psychological proximity of the mysterious foreground figures who, swathed and witch-like, appear to be engaged in some sinister ritual.
