Besides being a wonderful portrait, this painting is a very precise document on the technique of cello playing in the XVIIIth century. Because Ginsborough was himself a musician, it can be expected that the description is authentic. Of particular interest are: the leg grip on the bottom of the instrument, which has no end pin and rests on the calfs, more vertical than the modern hold; the right hand grip on the bow, close to the center of gravity; the left hand grip on the neck, slanted as
