Edward Dayes is amongst the best known English topographical painters of the late 18th century. He worked principally in watercolour, and his oil paintings are very rare. He was an indefatigable traveller in search of the 'picturesque' and visited many counties of England delineating the landscape. He is perhaps best known for being the teacher of Girtin and for his influence on the young Turner in whom he fired an interest in landscape painting.
