David Jones (1895 - 1974)

Imperial War Museum London

1941

David Jones served in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers during the First World War and many years later, in 1937, published a book entitled 'In Parenthesis'. It is dedicated to, among others, 'the enemy front-fighters who shared our pains against whom we found ourselves by misadventure', a clear indication of his solidarity with the enemy that finds further expression in this drawing. The inscription 'Oh Sisters Two, what shall we do' is a line from the Coventry Carol, associated with the theme of the Massacre of the Innocents.
