Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828 - 1882)

Tate Collection

1857 - 1864

A scene from 'Mort d' Arthur'. In a lighted chapel, a lady is helping to arm a kneeling knight in red, who seizes the moment to embrace her. Her long, white head-dress, as she stoops to kiss him, falls like a mantle down her blue dress. She is holding his long two-handled sword. On the knight's pointed shield is painted the figure of a maiden in distress - Andromeda, or the princess of the dragon story. To the right of the shield is the knight's crested helmet. Beyond the Chapel is a tented field, with knights going forth to joust.
