Vanessa Bell (1879 - 1961)

National Portrait Gallery

1912

An intimate and revealing portrait, suggestive of Virginia Woolf's invalidism, it was painted before the publication of any of her novels and in the year of her marriage to Leonard Woolf. Virginia Woolf disliked sitting for her portrait, and few likelnesses of her exist.
