This large marine subject is a view of Dundee from Broughty Ferry, at the mouth on the estuary of the Firth of Tay. In the 1850s Broughty Ferry was a separate village, a small fishing community on the outskirts of the town of Dundee, which has now been swallowed up by urban development.
