Henry Lamb (1883 - 1960)

Poole Museum

1922

This work depicts an unemployed Poole man who pestered Lamb to paint his portrait. Apparently, the sitter threw stones at Lamb's windows and shouted abuse about a 'privileged' artist 'who had never worked for a living'. The work reflects Poole's plight in the inter-war years, at a time of much poverty and unemployment.
