William Hogarth (1697 - 1764)

Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery

circa 1755 - 1760

Originally he was vomiting into a chamber pot but this was overpainted and he is now reading a letter. 19th century notes on the back state: that it was commissioned by his wife Susan as a lesson in temperance, and that his heirs could not bear anything so disrespectful. Who was responsible for the overpaint is not certain. Two inscriptions on the wall from Horace concern the abandonment of love. The sitter was a third cousin of Frederick, Prince of Wales. This work was acquired with assistance from the Wolfson Foundation.
