Allegorical figure of Pride in a niche. Crispin van den Broeck was the brother of Willem van den Broeck and known as a painter, draughtsman and engraver. He was commissioned by the Guild of St Sebastian (the young crossbowmen) to paint an altarpiece, and in 1582 he collaborated on the decorations for the State Entry into Antwerp of Francis of Anjou and contributed a painting of the Judgement of Solomon to the redecoration of the Stadhuis after its destruction in the ‘Spanish Fury' of 1576. His drawings for engravings, including the illustrations for Plantin, are numerous and are mostly dated from the 1570s onwards. Taken from Grove Art.
