Francis W Sargant (1870 - 1960)

This head was carved by Francis Sargant in Forte de Marmi in Italy, and is made of Carrara marble. Sargant was a pupil of the German sculptor Adolf von Hildebrand in Munich, and also studied with him in Italy. Hildebrand had a house in Florence and a villa in Forte de Marmi. He was an admirer of Roman and Italian sculpture, which were the point of departure for his own work. Sargant took Italian art as his model. This head of a boy is based on Early Renaissance carved portraits.Sargant modelled his sculptures in clay, and then had them copied in marble by a professional carver.
