These two portraits are of great interest to Cheltenham, as the diaries of Mr Hughes which have recently been discovered and are now in the possession of a Cheltenham resident show he was an important figure in that town up to the date of his death in 1794. He was Under-Sheriff of Gloucestershire in 1772, and in 1783 built Assembly Rooms in the High Street. He was buried in the North aisle of St. Mary's Parish Church, Cheltenham.
