Francesco Francia (1450 - 1518)

Ashmolean Museum

1502

The exact meaning of the composition of three figures is somewhat obscure. Professor JD Beazley thought to recognise the theme of certain lines of the Saturnalia of Macrobius, the Latin author of about 400 AD. The principal figure is a woman placing her forefinger to her lips, perhaps a representation of the Roman goddess Angerona.
