Eve Arnold (1912-2012)

V&A (Victoria & Albert Museum)

1965

Much like Arnold's most well-known images of the likes of Malcolm X and Marilyn Monroe, this photograph gives us a glimpse into an otherwise private world, and captures a sense of quiet anticipation. The Victoria & Albert Museum were delighted to receive the work as an addition to its broad collection of photographic works. The late Robin Gibson was the National Portrait Gallery's Chief Curator for 8 years, and worked with them from 1968 to 2001. He put together many memorable shows, including an exhibition of Eve Arnold's photography in 1991. Arnold often gave prints to people she worked closely with, and an expert on the photographer has suggested that this image was probably selected by Robin and printed especially for him.
