Gerard Byrne (born 1969)

Gallery of Modern Art

2001-2011

Byrne's works focus on historic people and events that have influenced and shaped modern and contemporary culture and society. In this series, the Irish artist has been accumulating a large body of documentary ‘evidence' on visits to Scotland over the last 10 years. He employs the language and strategies of Conceptual Art to explore the myth of the Loch Ness monster and examines materials relating to sightings and supposed photographic evidence. The gallery have selected 3 works to form a coherent group and a strong representation of this series and Gerard Byrne's practice. 1) photographs mounted in a glass vitrine entitled 'Some gestalt forms surveyed, and organized into primary structures, on dates between 2001 – 2011. Site: Loch Ness, Scotland'; 2) 'Untitled' which is a pair of photos depicting swimmer and path through trees to the loch shore; 3) A short black & white film entitled 'Figures (Some analogies surveyed, and organized into concrete poetry and conceptual film forms, on dates between 2001 - 2011)'. Purchased through the Art Fund International scheme.
