Martin Greenland (born 1962)

Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery

2007

This painting is inspired by the landscape around Coniston in the Lake District. Resolutely modern, it refuses to edit out the unpictureseque, juxtaposing otherwise pristine, verdant surroundings with modern elements: a reservoir, a Second World War pillbox, and a communications mast. The apparent realism of the work is, however, deceptive. Whilst Greenland does engage closely with the landscape surrounding him, he uses his imagination and memory to reinvent it, expressing his experiences of places rather than merely recording topography. Although the landscapes appear traditional at first glance, they are in fact a clever mixture of the visible world and the imagined.
