George Shaw (born 1966)

Herbert Art Gallery & Museum

2003

George Shaw's paintings, etchings and drawings, depict the tightly defined area of the post-war Tile Hill estate in Coventry, where he grew up. This work is a vibrant and luminous piece, made by building up layers of the Humbrol enamel paint normally used by model makers. Shaw depicts an ordinary walled area within a residential estate. Apparently mundane, the enclosed space and the uncertainty of what is beyond the doorway give the work a darker, more sinister edge.
