Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646 - 1723)

Down County Museum

circa 1705

The portrait is almost certainly a pendant to the painting of Lady Elizabeth Southwell (Lady Betty) which the Down County Museum acquired in 2000 with assistance from the Art Fund. Like the portrait of Lady Betty, this painting displays the drama and sense of movement typical of Baroque by the great swathes of crimson draperies around Southwell's waist and also in the atmospheric background landscape. The vigorous handling of paint, sense of realism in the direct expression on Southwell's face and the plainness of his attire, are characteristic of Kneller's style.
