These drawings by a prominent Scottish architect are of great interest in part due to his involvement with the practice of Robert Adam and his brothers. The Gothic scheme for the dining room at Sundrum is a good example of the Castle style developed by Adam and used by Paterson for several Scottish projects. Its decorative nature helps illustrate the move towards a more academic approach to using historical sources that developed as a reaction towards designs such as this in the later 19th century. Sundrum fell into disrepair in the 1930s so these drawings have become an even more important record of a principal room in its 18th century interior. The Collection is strong in drawings from the Scottish Baronial period and will benefit greatly from the context provided by these drawings.
