Sketch for a Panorama:The town of Largs, Ayrshire and the Surrounding Scenery

Samuel Parlber (active 1850 - 1878)

1856

This is an early topographic vista of the resort town of Largs on the Ayrshire coast in the south-west of Scotland. It takes in the town and shore with the gardens of Halkshill House and the valley of the Gogo water. Of particular importance is the Colm's Day (St Columba's Day) cattle and horse market in the left foreground which was the principal traditional market is Largs and still continues in a modern form. All that is known of the artist, Samuel Parlber, is that he produced a number of pictures of Largs in mid-1856, although there is no record of him painting anywhere else.
