2006

Katie Walker's experimental approach to design combines geometric principles and sculptural forms to make highly original but superbly functional furniture. In this re-invention of the traditional rocking chair, she has combined the traditional - ash wood and leather - with contemporary materials in the form of steel supports and ash laminates developed for nautical use and tested by NASA. The shape of the Ribbon Rocking Chair was initially inspired by the curved sculptural forms of sculptor Naum Gabo and Japanese basket maker Shono Shounsai. The chair seamlessly combines craft values with sleek contemporary design. Manchester Art Gallery is home to the north of England's leading public collection of contemporary furniture.
