Simon Periton (born 1964)

York Art Gallery

2008

This work comprises of 18 individually framed pieces of glass which have been spray painted and form a shape resembling a shattered rose. The work was commissioned by York Art Gallery in 2008 as part of its contemporary interventions programme. The work was inspired by paintings, ceramics and glass in the gallery's collection including the portrait of Lady Francis Fairfax after Geeraerts and works by the York artist William Peckitt. The rose was inspired by a portrait of an Unknown Woman Holding a Rose by an unknown artist. Periton explained that he was particularly drawn to paintings of unknown subjects or by anonymous artists, ‘I became interested in this silent history that sits alongside the remembered histories of the great and the good'.
