JMW Turner (1775 - 1851)

Abbotsford

These two watercolours were painted during Turner's visit to Sir Walter Scott's Abbotsford home in the Scottish Borders in 1831. The post-card sized paintings were used to illustrate 'The Poetical Works of Sir Walter Scott' published by Robert Cadell in 1833. A number of additional drawings by Turner are understood to be beneath the mounts. The paintings will go on permanent display at Abbotsford following the completion of the historic home's planned refurbishment in 2013. Mrs Barrow, a long-term supporter of the Art Fund, chose to give the works through the charity to ensure that they will be enjoyed by the public in perpetuity.
