Gabriel Orozco (born 1962)

Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art

1997

The Mexican artist Orozco works in a huge variety of different media, often incorporating found objects which he alters, making us view them in a different way. These three works are based on hugely expanded forms of wax, pinched and twisted between the artist's finger and thumb, and subsequently cast in aluminium. Their contorted shapes have a strangeness that is at once natural and fantastic, and seem to change appearance from every angle. The transformation of a material from mundane and mutable into that which is monumental and permanent is typical of the artist's oeuvre. These sculptures were presented to the gallery jointly by the artist and Anthony d'Offay and are the first works by Orozco to be acquired by the National Galleries of Scotland.
