Sir Peter Lely (1618 - 1680)

Dulwich Picture Gallery

circa 1670

This portrait is a pendant to 'A Boy as a Shepherd', which is a popular feature of the Dulwich collection and both paintings have matching carved frames. The two paintings were once owned by Charles Fairfax Murray who donated 40 works to the gallery in 1911. However this portrait had been sold from the collection before the donation. Lely became famous for his portraits set in a landscape, often with a pastoral mood.
