Anglo-Saxon

Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery

circa 869-880

Norwich Castle is widely recognised as having the single most important collection of Anglo-Saxon archaeology in the East of England. This is the first coin of King Aethelred's reign to be acquired by Norwich Castle. The coin was probably struck in either Ipswich or Thetford. The museum aims to display the coin in a case examining the Viking presence in East Anglia. The Vikings are a difficult theme to explore in museum displays in East Anglia because so few objects with direct Scandinavian links have survived.
