Gwen John (1876 - 1939)

Tenby Museum and Art Gallery

1) circa 1895; 2) 1955

Gwen John spent much of her childhood in Tenby and is regarded as one of the principal Welsh artists of the 20th century. This drawing of an unidentified sitter dates from her first year at the Slade School of Art. There is a lack of surviving works by Gwen John from this stage of her life and it has something of the clarity and economy that was to characterise her later style. The second work is by Edwin John (Augustus John's son) and shows Gwen's house in Meudon and a portrait of his daughter Sara John as a child on the reverse.
