This previously undocumented drawing is an important document in the history of one of the major buildings of the 20th century – the Glasgow School of Art, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. It testifies to the close relationship between Mackintosh and the Director of the School of Art, Francis Newbery. The drawing was presented to the highly influential German publisher Alexander Koch and is further evidence of the continuing relationship between the Glasgow arts community and progressive continental design. Furthermore it is probably a preparatory sketch for Newbery's finished group portrait of the School Governors, Newbery and Mackintosh which hangs in the Glasgow School of Art today.
Alexander Koch; by descent; Nagel Auktionen, 2010; Billcliffe Gallery, Glasgow.
