Paul Sandby was the first English artist to use the process of aquatint and published three sets of aquatint views of-Wales in 1775 and the two following years, each set consisting of twelve views. 'The Iron Forge between Dolgelly and Barmouth' was a particularly welcome addition to the national collection in Wales as it was the only view missing from the series. The second print represents Rhaeadr-y-Wennol, the well-known Swallow Falls near Bettws.y-Coed. One of five gifts to four museums by Sir Harry Wilson through the Art Fund between 1933 and 1936.
