Tate has nine prints by Arthur Boyd and is delighted to add its first painting by the eminent Australian artist to its collection. Painted with vigorous brushstrokes, the work focuses on an Aboriginal woman in Western bridal attire as she bends over a creek, her arms outstretched and her oversized hands grasping towards the shrubbery around her. This work forms part of a large bequest from Mrs Ann Forsdyke. Mrs Forsdyke worked at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in the 1950s as assistant to the Director Bryan Robertson. Forsdyke's interest in Australian art was fostered through her experience working with Robertson, who promoted new Australian art in the Sixties.
