George Engleheart (1752 - 1829)

Dumfries Museum

1806

This portrait miniature of Sir Pulteney Malcolm GCB GCMG (1768-1838) depicts him wearing naval uniform. Sir Malcolm was born in Langholm in Dumfriesshire and entered the navy during the American Revolutionary War. He was promoted to Rear-Admiral in 1813 and served during the war with the United States as third-in-Command. The Dumfries area has unusual links with America and John Paul Jones, Father of the American Navy was also born in the Dumfries area. Engleheart was a well known miniature painter who painted George III many times. The artist imbues his sitters with a sense of gentleness, elegance and serenity; even his military officers look more at home in the drawing room than the battlefield.
