This oval pendant is particularly unusual because it was formed from reusing Roman mosaic glass, instead of the more common gold and garnet fittings. It provides evidence of the trend of Romanitas or adoption of Roman fashion styles in Early Saxon England. Being gold backed, the pendant was a high-status decorative object, owned and worn by a member of the upper classes of Saxon society. Lynn Museum has a fine collection of over 300 locally found Saxon artifacts, but only a handful of these objects are made from gold or gilded. This is the first Saxon pendant to enter the collection.

Provenance

Found by a metal detectorist in the King's Lynn area and declared Treasure in 2009.
