The pendant is the first Anglo-Saxon cross found in Nottinghamshire although they have been found in the East Midlands, Suffolk, Norfolk, Northamptonshire and Yorkshire. There are two well known Anglo-Saxon sites in Newark, on Millgate and within Newark Castle Gardens but this is the first find from the area which exhibits the higher end skills and craftsmanship of the Anglo-Saxons. This pendant will help the museum explore and represent notions such as adornment and decoration, while challenging perceptions of the Dark Ages, Christianity, wealth and status and increase our understanding and knowledge of the Anglo-Saxon world in the local vicinity.

Provenance

Discovered by a metal detectorist near Newark and declared Treasure in 2007.
