Eglinton watercolours

This collection of 20 detailed watercolours record the Eglinton Tournament which took place at Eglinton Castle in North Ayrshire in 1839. The Eglinton Tournament was one of the most remarkable and influential manifestations of the Gothic revival in 19th century Britain. The watercolours are in part unfinished, with decorative borders, as they were drawn to be used by Day & Hague for a deluxe folio account of the tournament. Together with 7 heraldic shields from the tournament also acquired with an Art Fund grant, they illustrate an important part of Scotland's social history and Dean Castle can now place them in the context of their fine collection of arms and armour.
